Dear MCLS Community,

Thanks to everyone who attended our launch event last Thursday! It was
wonderful to see so many familiar and new faces. Please join us for the
first symposium of the 2021 MCLS Online program organized by Sara Caviola,
entitled "Emotions and self-perceptions towards mathematics: New insights
from large datasets"! An abstract is included at the bottom of this email.

The symposium will feature presentations from:
Serena Rossi (PhD students, Loughborough University),
Giulia Crisci (PhD students, University of Padova),
Rachel A. Conlon (Graduate Student, Florida State University), and
Krzysztof Cipora (Lecturer, Loughborough University)

The symposium will take place *Friday, July 23 at 11am EST (4pm BST).*
Information
to join the call is below. Note that this year, we'll be using one room
which can be joined at any time from the link

*Abstract*
Research in developmental and cognitive psychology is offering an
increasing number of examples of how negative feelings and self-perceptions
towards math (math anxiety – MA, self-competence etc.) can deeply interfere
with successful mathematical learning. Nevertheless, despite general
knowledge of the existence of certain effects, still a lot remains to be
understood. In particular, in several instances effect sizes differ
considerably between studies, and confidence intervals associated with them
can be very broad due to limited sample sizes, potential moderation effects
can be also blurred. The present Symposium will examine the implications
and new insights into math anxiety and mathematics self-perceptions offered
by large scale studies in different cultures and populations. In the first
presentation, Serena Rossi (PhD students, Loughborough University) will
present data (N = 923) on how the link between math-gender stereotype
endorsement, math self-concept, and MA differs between women and men, and
on measurement invariance of these constructs across genders. Giulia Crisci
(PhD students, University of Padova) will look at self-concept from a
slightly different perspective, in particular the overestimation (i.e.,
positive illusory bias, PIB) of children academic abilities. In her talk,
she focuses on the relation between self-perception of math competencies
and executive functions in children with ADHD traits in primary school (N =
300). Rachel A. Conlon, (Graduate Student, Florida State University) will
present a large-scale study about teachers' MA and how it relates to their
students' MA level. This longitudinal study with 230 primary grades
teachers and their ~2800 students examines if teachers’ math anxiety
uniquely relates to students’ math anxiety at the end of the school year
after accounting for their math anxiety at the beginning of the school
year. Krzysztof Cipora (Lecturer, Loughborough University) will present a
project aimed at developing an openly available large-scale database of raw
scores of Abbreviated Math Anxiety Scale collected in different cultures
and age groups.
