Dear Colleagues,

We are excited to share two incredible academic opportunities in
Educational Neuroscience offered by Gallaudet University: the PhD in
Educational Neuroscience (PEN) and the Certificate in Educational
Neuroscience (CEN). Both programs are designed for those passionate about
the intersection of cognitive science, learning, and neuroscience, focusing
on bilingual education and visual learning.
PhD in Educational Neuroscience (PEN)

The PEN program is a pioneering, research-intensive doctoral program
emphasizing bilingual (American Sign Language-English) neuroscience
training. Students develop expertise in state-of-the-art cognitive
neuroscience methods, such as EEG and fMRI, and conduct research on visual
learning, language development, numeracy, action understanding, and social
and emotional development. The program provides four years of funding for
domestic doctoral students. Students work closely with faculty mentors and
have access to top-tier labs, such as the Action and Brain Lab (ABL; PI:
Lorna Quandt), Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience (CAN) Lab (PI: Rachel
Pizzie), and Numeracy and Educational Neuroscience (NENS) Lab (PI: Ilaria
Berteletti). This interdisciplinary program is housed within Gallaudet’s
Visual Language and Visual Learning (VL2) Research center, fostering
collaboration with the Motion Light Lab (ML2; Director: Melissa Malzkuhn)
and Gesture Literacy and Knowledge Studio (GLKS; Co-Directors Patrick
Boudreault and Gaurav Mathur), along with connections to a global network
of cognitive neuroscience labs.
Certificate in Educational Neuroscience (CEN)

The CEN is an ideal option for professionals or post-baccalaureate students
looking to complement their current work or studies with foundational
knowledge in Educational Neuroscience. Students in the program take
approximately 6 courses (18 credits) related to Educational Neuroscience.
The CEN can be completed as a stand-alone program, or in combination with
another graduate degree program at Gallaudet University. This certificate
provides critical insight into how neuroscience can inform educational
practices and vice versa, focusing on learning processes in both deaf and
hearing individuals. The CEN can serve as a springboard to launch your
graduate career and a valuable asset for educators, researchers, and
practitioners aiming to apply cognitive neuroscience concepts in their
fields.

Both programs uphold the rich tradition of bilingualism at Gallaudet, and
all classes and lab activities are conducted in American Sign Language
(ASL). For more information about these programs, including application
