Hello list

I am an anthropologist by training and I defended my doctorate in
linguistics seeking to collaborate with public education. I dedicated
myself to studying the relationship between culture and language, looking
at the discursive structure of how the best answers to the OBMEP (Olimpíada
Brasileira de Matemática das Escolas Públicas - Brazilian Mathematical
Olympiad of Public Schools) problems were composed of words, numbers, and
images.

I have been researching this subject since 2011 and, along this path,
despite not being a classroom teacher or a mathematician, I have noticed
that these professionals are interested in words like language and culture,
even though they are not linguists or anthropologists.

This encouraged me to seek a dialogue between mathematics and the
Portuguese language as a way to cover a gap in the thinking of both
disciplines: the ability to count.

Both in language, when structuring a paragraph, and in mathematics, when
following numbering patterns, sequential order is essential; however, while
in mathematics it is seen as "well-structured" for its formal correctness,
in language it is valued for "making sense" and creating coherence.

The article and materials discuss these ideas and are presented here as an
invitation to continue this dialogue.
