Postdoctoral Research Associate
The Study of Language and Math (SLaM, http://slam.uconn.edu<http://slam.uconn.edu/>) based in the CoppolaLab (PI: Dr. Marie Coppola) at the University of Connecticut (UConn) seeks a full-time postdoctoral research associate. UConn is home to a large, vibrant, interdisciplinary language and learning science community. This postdoctoral research associate will work with a highly collaborative team including the PI Dr. Marie Coppola, a full-time Laboratory Manager, a doctoral student, and a team of research assistants. Deaf and hard of hearing candidates are especially encouraged to apply.
This postdoc will join an NSF-funded project investigating the impact of variable language experience on the development of symbolic and non-symbolic number concepts in typically hearing, deaf, and hard of hearing children, including deaf children acquiring sign and spoken languages. Projects include: 1) characterizing the impact of language modality and timing of access to language on number concept development; 2) examining the interrelationships among different symbolic formats for number; 3) designing a training study to stimulate development of foundational number concepts; 4) investigating the contributions of other cognitive factors (e.g., executive functioning) to number cognition; and 5) understanding symbolic and non-symbolic number development in deaf and hard of hearing children. The successful applicant will be responsible for conducting and interpreting analyses of behavioral studies with children 2-9 years old and preparing results for journal submission and publication.
