Dear MCLS members,

I am advertising a PhD position in my lab. The aim of this project is to further examine the role of metacognition in children’s mathematical development.
It would be great if you could circulate this among your networks. More details can be found below and at
https://www.kuleuven.be/personeel/jobsite/jobs/60211001?hl=en&lang=en

Thanks very much!
Looking forward to seeing you all in Loughborough in a few weeks!

Bert

PhD (4 years) in early mathematical development and metacognition
Ref. BAP-2023-224
This project is an international collaboration in the context of an FWO-WEAVE application between the research groups of Bert De Smedt
(KU Leuven) en Stephan Vogel (University of Graz), which are specialized in cognitive development. An overview of these research groups
can be found at https://ppw.kuleuven.be/pserg/psergstaff/00040938 en https://psychologie.uni-graz.at/en/educational-neuroscience/
The involved research groups have a long standing research collaboration and they have a long standing expertise in the supervision of
PhD students. They have a strong international network with other research around the globe who are studying mathematical cognition and
learning, learning difficulties and dynamic assessments.

Project
There is nascent evidence that children’s metacognitive skills are a solid and reliable predictor of their future mathematical achievement.
Metacognitive skills refer to ongoing self-regulating processes that people use to monitor and control task performance (e.g., realize when
you make an error; decide when to additionally check the answer to a particular question). In this international project in collaboration with
the Educational Neuroscience Unit of the University of Graz (Austria; https://psychologie.uni-graz.at/en/educational-neuroscience/) we aim
to investigate more systematically the neurocognitive mechanisms underlying these metacognitive skills during the solution and learning
of arithmetic in children and adults. The project consists of three work packages that investigate (1) the association between arithmetic
performance and metacognitive regulation in four age groups (2) the role of metacognitive regulation in learning novel types of arithmetic
problems and (3) whether the association between metacognitive regulation and arithmetic is causal by examining the effects of stimulating
metacognitive regulation on arithmetic performance and learning. Collectively these studies are destined to yield important new insights in
the associations between metacognitive regulation and arithmetic performance, learning and development. They provide a critical ground
for the development of educational and remedial interventions.
Profile
• You have a master degree in Psychology, Educational Sciences, Speech and Language Pathology or relevant discipline. Or you are
obtaining this degree this academic term.
• You have a strong interest in neurocognitive development.
• You have experience with experimental cognitive developmental research.
• You have excellent statistical skills.
• You have excellent academic English writing and presentation skills.
• You are well organized and a good planner.
• You have strong communication skills and are able to collaborate with parents, teachers and schools.
• You are able to communicate in Dutch as this project involves data collection in young children at schools in Belgium.
You can apply to this position until June 26 2023. The interviews for this position will preferably take place in the week of 3 July. The decision
on this position will be made before 11 July 2023.
Interested applicants should send their CV, motivation letter and the names of 2 referents via the online application (see below). During the
interview, you will be asked to give a short presentation on research that you executed during your education and/or a journal article (sent
before the interview) on the topic of the project.
Offer
We offer a full-time appointment, initially for one year, but given satisfactory performance for 4 years in total.
This position is an excellent opportunity for early career researchers who want to sharpen their research skills in mathematical cognition
and learning in children. The collaboration with the Educational Neuroscience Unit of the University of Graz opens additional opportunities
for international research experiences and exchange.
